If you are the one who is planning to move out of your home and planning to stay alone, be it for the sake of work or for studies, or any other reason, I am here to guide you what all are the essentials that you need to have to prepare your own self to stay alone and happy!
I am also one of them who had never before stayed alone. I had always been either at home or in a hostel, where you are surrounded by either your family or friends. Its been only sometime that I had to move out of my own state and start living alone. So let me first share the pros and cons of staying alone.
Pros of staying alone:
There are a number of advantages of staying alone, but the most important thing is that it makes you independent. It makes you self-sufficient, as no matter what, you have to get everything done by yourself and also face everything whatever comes in your way. It makes you strong and also gives you the self-confidence that yes you can be an all-rounder!
Cons:
I would not say these are the disadvantages, but these are some things which we have to face in the initial days of the alone life. Some of us who are not used to manage household works and the work life/study life will find it literally difficult to cope up with managing both and side by side doing time management. But yes, believe me, it happens with time. Initially, remembering the household chores, deciding what actually you need to buy, keeping track of those becomes really exhaustive, but gradually one gets accustomed to these things, and then it becomes smooth and a part of life.
Things you need:
Now coming to the point of what all one need essentially when they are planning to stay alone for the very first time, I am listing out those which I have felt the need of, and what I believe will be useful to anyone of such kind:
A good place to stay: The most important thing is a good place to stay. Paying Guest, or Flats or Apartments, whatever you choose, there are a few things to be kept in mind before you select one. Those are: (i) a decent and safe locality: should have a good amount of people staying around, (ii) proper ventilation of the rooms: the rooms should have a light coloured walls and a decent flooring, otherwise it makes the room look very clumsy, (iii) should have at least some essential shops nearby like a medicine shop, a grocery shop etc, (iv) proper water and electricity supply.
Kitchen Essentials: Whether you are planning to cook yourself or get it delivered or made by a cook, induction oven or an electric pressure cooker is a must. If you are actually planning to get your meals from outside, even then these are necessary, as you can just boil the milk, or make some quick noodles or pasta, or just boil water to drink/gargle (when you have a cold). But on the other hand, if you are the one who likes to cook by your own self, its preferable to have a regular gas supply, a gas lighter and an over. This saves money by saving the electricity bill and is also very flexible to use rather than the induction oven or an electric pressure cooker. Moreover, if you are planning to make your own food, you should also keep a track of what all are the foods you would like to have, and get spices and groceries accordingly. And also if you are staying in a place which has a relatively hot climate, you should also think of getting a fridge, based on the type of your requirement (but yes, this is not an absolute necessity!). And yes, you should also have a set of knives and a chopping board, and also some bowls, plates and spoons!
Home Essentials: Now coming to the remaining part of the home, apart from the kitchen, you need a couple of things which are like the must-haves. Those are: a bucket and a mug, soaps (this includes bath soap, detergent, toilet cleaning soap, handwash etc), an emergency light (in case someday the current goes off), broom and a mop, floor mats, set of good curtains, mosquito repellants, a good lock and key for the main door, dustbin, some chairs/tools depending on the requirement, and last but not the least, a full length mirror. A washing machine is again an optional thing, which is not a bare necessity, but one may think of having it if required, as it reduces the load of washing clothes. One must also keep a pack of basic medicines and a first aid kit which comes handy at the time of urgency.
So yes, these are the very very basic, but essential things that I felt so far is needed, when one is planning to start staying alone and away from home. There might be a number of other things also, but the ones listed above are the kind of must-haves!
And yes, of course, the most important thing required is: 'a positive attitude towards life'!!
